TVP Solar has announced the installation of a solar-assisted air-conditioning (SAC) system at Saudi Aramco’s HQ in Saudi Arabia.

TVP installed high-vacuum flat MT-Power panels to power a double-effect absorption chiller. In turn, the chiller unit produces cold air for Saudi Aramco’s Al-Munirah Community Library.

At the core of the SAC system is the MT-Power panels, which have been designed specifically for desert operation. Firstly, the panels are capable of operating within higher ambient temperatures exceeding 50°C, more so than photovoltaic systems.

Additionally, it can continue to operate without constant cleaning, thanks largely to a different shaping of the epidermal cell that helps diffuse light capture. This is markedly different to traditional solar concentrators that need constant attention.

Commenting on the system, TVP Solar's CEO, Mr Piero Abbate shared: "TVP Solar is proud to support Saudi Aramco in this promising field of solar air cooling. With our MT-Power panels, TVP can help reduce the high energy consumption related to electric air conditioning in Saudi Arabia, substituting oil use with solar."

TVP’s solar panels contribute up to 65% of the chiller’s energy needs during daylight hours and has produced a daily average of thermal energy output of 2 kWh per m2 of active panel area. The system has the potential to supply over 815 kWh per m2 per year.
